GWENDOLIN LEWIS BFA ASMA is the winner of a number of awards for her art work. Gwendolin has a particular passion for painting in Soft Pastels as they seem to suit the nature of her subjects.
Drawing is also a strong component of Gwendolin’s work, as well as painting in oils; but mostly leaves this medium to her larger, Maritime subjects, which have bright colours, textures and stronger, bold contours.
Originally from Melbourne, Gwendolin trained in design at Swinburne college of Art where she learnt the disciplines that she continues to use as in her artworks today.
Gwendolin studied Fine Art at University of Newcastle in 1999 / 2000 and currently works as an artist and art teacher from her studio in Mayfield, an inner suburb of Newcastle.
Artist Statement:
WATER And REFLECTIONS… I am drawn to subjects that captivate my interest and nourish my spirit.
Walking in the open landscape, in my garden, or along beaches watching the wild surf. In my eyes, all could be captured in paint or drawn in pastel.
Combining knowledge from my design years and my Fine Art degree, to produce work that can be illustrative and also impressionist, with a love of mark making.
I prefer intimate scenes rather than vast landscapes, looking for interesting light passages shapes, and tonal contrast. My work encompasses and explores my immediate environment and draws on my acutely honed skills of observation.
